James Madison, the Father of the Constitution (Yes, I've been reading up on American Government in Homeschool) realized that a good government was impossible apart from morality and virtue among the citizenry. At the Virginia Convention which assembled to ratify the new U.S. Constitution, he stated the following : "
I go on this great republican principle, that the people will have virtue and intelligence to select men of virtue and wisdom. Is there no virtue among us? If there be not, we are in a wretched situation."
I think this is good and thus I wanted to post it here!
